MELEK’S JEWELLERY Whitecross Street Market | instagram
Everything you see is made from solid silver. Everything has been individually handmade, using semi-precious and natural gemstones. Melek – she goes by ‘Mel’ – has designed and made many of the pieces herself, and commissioned or bought items she likes from other jewellers.
Mel is a skilled professional jewellery maker herself. She studied in Hatton Garden for many years learning the techniques of silver working, jewellery making, and how to polish and cut stones. She has been selling her jewellery from her stall at Whitecross Street market for nine years. She also makes items to order.
What you can buy on the stall
Jewellery for men, women, and children.
Stones
Mel has good selection of natural stones which include turquoise, labradorite, limestone, lapis, malachite, amethyst, garnet, peridot, citron, opal, tigers’ eyes, black onyx, cornelian, different types of quartz, as well as freshwater pearls, coral, shells, meteorites and fossils.
Styles
Much of the jewellery on display is contained in boxes which generally follow the same themes.
One tray is of marcasite jewellery. marcasite is made of what is commonly called ‘fools’ gold’ or pyrites. Tiny grains are glued onto silver to produce a Victorian style of jewellery.
There’s a Gothic tray basically for people like skulls, and animals, and big rings.
There are traditional styles like puzzle rings, Irish ‘claddagh’, Celtic patterns, filigree settings, and ethnic settings
Also different types of charms like animals for charm bracelets or to go on a necklace.
And many more … You need to spend a few minutes.
Prices and value
The prices go from £5 to a few hundred pounds. But whatever you buy, it will be substantially cheaper than what you would have to pay in a high street shop (or a back street shop come to that) because Mel doesn’t have the overheads.
Before thinking of spending big money in a shop, have a look at Mel’s stall and see how the prices compare.
Bestsellers
In summer the silver hoops are a bestseller and the blues and greens of turquoise are a popular choice. Necklaces are popular in the summer and earrings and bracelets are popular in the winter.
Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day are great times to buy something special.
