My regular is FWD at 161A Whitecross Street EC1Y 8JL fix-coffee.co.uk. (Most of us will always know it as ‘Fix’, their old name.)
Fix (alright, FWD) is a godsend to locals and Barbican residents who want a nice place to work on our computers, meet friends, or relax. The coffee is delicious and the staff are friendly.
COFFEE TREE CAFÉ at 92 Old Street, EC1V 9AY coffeetreegroup.co.uk is a coffee shop on the corner of Whitecross Street and Old Street, from where you can contemplate St Luke’s church and watch cars chasing the pedestrians off the inadequately-timed crossing.
MOLA CAFÉ at 187 Whitecross Street EC1Y 8QP molacafe.co.uk is near the Old Street end of Whitecross Street and sells breakfasts and lunches as well as cakes and coffee.
PASSIONE CAFÉ at 3 Cherry Tree Walk EC1Y 8NX is in the parade next to Waitrose.
GIDDY-UP in Fortune Park EC1Y 0SB| giddyupcoffee.co.uk has a weird name but it is a quality coffee shop trading out of a converted tool shed in Fortune Street Park. It is a family-run business with branches also in Islington Green, and in a bike shop near St Paul’s. They take coffee very seriously and they even produce their own house blend.
Even on the coldest Winder mornings, devoted coffee drinkers line up outside the serving hatch to buy cups of espresso, and then drink them on the freezing benches. It has to be something special.
FROZEN RIVER BUBBLE TEA SHOP. I haven’t tried it, but it is popular with Chinese students.
